CENTRAL RUBBER LABORATORY

The CDC Central Rubber Laboratory is in charge of specifications concerning Technically Specified Rubber, i.e. CNR 10, 3 CV and L grades, in accordance with the ISO 2000 and SMR norms.

  • Tests carried out in the Central Rubber Laboratory include:
  • Mooney viscosity,
  • Initial Plasticity (Po),
  • Plasticity Retention Index (PRI),
  • Dirt content,
  • Ash content,
  • Volatile matter,
  • Lovibond color.
  • Accelerated Storage Hardening (ASHT)

The lab analyses are done to evaluate both the Dry Rubber Content (DRC) and the quality of the rubber in general. This is to make sure the rubber being shipped meets the specifications and quality requested.

CDC runs six Rubber Factories. There are 3 Sheet Factories attached to Mbonge, Meanja and Malende Estates respectively and 3 Central Factories at Tiko, Mukonje and Pendamboko. The Sheet factories are run by the Estate Managers of the Estates to which they are attached and the 3 Central Factories are run by Factory managers who are all engineers. The operations of all the factories are coordinated by the Manager Rubber Production.

Rubber Processing

The six factories process natural rubber in three technically specified marketable grades:

  • SHEET RUBBER as Ribbed Smoke Sheets (RSS),
  • CRUMB RUBBER as CNR 10, 3CV (Constant Viscosity) and L (Light Coloured Rubber) .

The 3 Sheet Factories have a capacity of 30 tons/day while the 3 Central Factories have the following capacities:

Part View of the Tiko Rubber Factory

In order to achieve maximum output by keeping the factories running all the time, a maintenance scheme is meticulously respected for all the factories. There is a routine maintenance program and provision is made available for curative maintenance when the need arises. Maintenance is managed by the Manager Rubber Production Maintenance (MRPM).
