The Information Systems
Department (ISD) is one of the youngest departments in the Corporation
created in 1987 primarily for Financial Information Management,
when it was realized that the financial operations of the Corporation
were in dire need of timely, efficient and reflective results
for the benefit of management and consequently the effective
running of the Corporation.
Since then it has extended
its activities as need arose and currently operating as a complete
Information Systems Department. The function of the Information
Systems Department now is as follows:

Provide
Computing Services to CDC
-
Study
and Analyze the need for computerization
-
Advise
Management of its needs and recommendimplementation strategies
-
Design
and develop applications to meet requirements of operations
-
Carry
out hardware and software installations
-
Maintain
and Support hardware and software
-
Train
and Upgrade users in operational procedures

CONTROL ROOM
Due to CDC’s wide
area of operations and no proper communication system to establish
a wide area network, the department manages a fleet of about
250 computers and 130 printers. These systems are installed
in each of the operational units (Estate, Factory and Service)
to run both the management and office applications. There are
four local networks located at the Group Offices and at Head
Office where activities are high and end-users need to frequently
share resources. The Head Office network is connected to the
internet by a wireless internet service.

The management applications
which have been put in place by ISD and generalized in all the
operational units to run the various operations of the corporation
include:

Accounts which runs the accounts

Stores which runs stores and jobs

Personnel
Database which manages the personnel

Payroll
Application which runs the salaries

Farm
& Factory Applications which run the activities of the
Estates and Factories

Vehicle
and Plant Fleet Applications which manage the operations of
vehicles and heavy duty plants respectively.

The
Budget Application which runs the preparation and execution
of the budget
-
Export
Sales Management Application which runs the sale of rubber
based on regular overseas contracts.

Other
office personnel also use Office Applications like Word Processors
and Spreadsheets as key office tool in executing their work.

ISD also
provides support services and periodical training for end-users.
We carry out first aid maintenance on our equipment even though
real maintenance of the hardware and software is contracted
out to experts.

In carrying
out its duties, ISD has a work force of two Analyst, which include
the MIS, two Computer Programmers, 1 Systems Administrator ,
1 centrally based Hardware Technician, several End User support
Technicians and Data Processing Clerks allocated to the different
operational units
